What EN 54-25 actually requires from wireless detectors

Most spec sheets list "EN 54-25 compliant" as a single line item, next to the battery voltage and the IP rating. In practice, the standard covers three separate things: the radio link itself, how the system behaves when that link is disrupted, and how failures are reported back to the panel.

The radio link

EN 54-25 sets a minimum acceptable signal margin, not just a frequency band. A detector can broadcast on the correct frequency and still fail certification if it doesn't maintain enough margin against interference from other building systems — lift motors and large HVAC units are the usual culprits during commissioning.

Behaviour under disruption

The standard requires a system to distinguish between a device going offline and a genuine fault condition, and to say so distinctly at the panel. Cheaper systems often report both as a generic "supervisory" fault, which slows down troubleshooting during a real incident.

Fault reporting

Finally, the standard specifies how quickly a lost device must be reported — typically within 100 seconds of three consecutive missed polls. When you're reviewing a wireless proposal, ask the installer to demonstrate this specific behaviour on site rather than relying on the certificate alone.
